Intsangu: The Weed

Nomawonga Khumalo is a Johannesburg-based writer and director who is currently in development for debut feature film, THE BURSARY. The film was selected for the 2019 edition of the Durban Film Mart where it won prizes under the 'Most Promising Narrative' and 'Best South African Narrative' categories. The project was also shortlisted for the Sundance Development Lab and Cinemart that same year. The piece is Nomawonga’s writing and directing debut in the short film format. The film was selected for the PÖFF, the shorts section at the Estonian Black Nights Film Festival. Five Tiger has also been selected to screen at the 2021 edition of the prestigious Sundance Film Festival. Nomawonga’s tenure in the film industry spans over a decade, working as ‘set tutor, production assistant, Camera technician and script supervisor’. She has worked on local and international commercials, series, shorts and feature films. She is moved by stories of identity, family and society with a special interest in how institutions serve and afflict each respectively.
